2027 Elections: Loyalty to Candidate or Loyalty to Tribe? What Do The Numbers Say?
Nigeria’s First and Second Republics were openly defined by tribal politics.
Awolowo in the West. Zik in the East. Ahmadu Bello in the North. Shagari balancing it all.
After the annulled June 12, 1993 election of MKO Abiola, many believed we had outgrown it.
That Nigeria had moved beyond “my tribe, my people.”
**Fast forward to 2026.**
The question is back. Louder.
In the South East, many expect Peter Obi to push his 2023 vote of **89.42%** even higher in 2027. Some are already projecting **99%**.
**The hard questions:**
1. Is this massive regional support proof of belief in Obi as the *best candidate*?
2. Or is it evidence that tribal politics is not only alive, but stronger than ever in AlaIgbo?
**Let’s look at the 2023 numbers:**
- **Obi - SE**: 89.42%
- **Tinubu - SW**: 55.77%
- **Atiku - North**: 37.16%
No other region voted so overwhelmingly for “their own” in 2023.
So we must ask:
- Do other regions have less tribal loyalty?
- Or is tribal sentiment simply less of a factor outside the SE?
- If the SE repeats a 90%+ vote for Obi in 2027, does that confirm the “Regional Champion” tag critics use?
**Here’s the reality:**
No one becomes President of Nigeria without spread. Without numbers across zones.
A candidate perceived as only a *tribal and religious champion* struggles to win national trust.
Regional dominance alone will not carry the polls.
**The Double Standard Debate**
On social media today:
- A Yoruba person supporting Tinubu is called a “tribal bigot.”
- An Igbo person supporting Obi is called “voting for the best candidate.”
But can’t it be the same thing both ways?
Can’t a Yoruba man voting Tinubu also believe he is the best?
Can’t a Northerner voting Atiku also believe he is the best?
**The numbers suggest tribal sentiment is not the only driver:**
- Yorubas gave Tinubu **55.77%**. That means **44.23%** of SW votes went to non-Yoruba candidates.
- Northerners gave Atiku **37.16%**. That means **66.84%** went to non-Northern candidates.
- The SE gave non-Igbo candidates just **10.58%**.
**So we ask you directly:**
1. Will AlaIgbo vote on ethnic lines again in 2027 like they did in 2023?
2. Are we heading for a repeat of the same voting patterns and a reinforcement of tribal politics?
3. Is it time for the SE to change the “enclave politics” narrative of the last few decades?
4. If we truly believe in One Nigeria, shouldn’t we see votes spread across tribal lines?
5. Or does it not matter at all — because every Nigerian has the right to vote based on personal choice?
**This is not about attacking any region. This is about asking the uncomfortable questions.**
Because politics is about power. And power in a multi-tribal country must be earned across tribes.
